Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¾ teaspoon fine salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise and seeds scraped
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two (9-inch) round cake pans and set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating until fully incorporated. Add the vanilla extract and mix until combined.
  4. Add the flour mixture in three batches, alternating with the buttermilk, and mix until just combined. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and spread into an even layer. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
  5. Remove the cakes from the oven and let cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Turn the cakes out onto wire racks and let cool completely before glazing.
  6. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Continue to cook until the butter is golden brown, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from the heat and add the brown sugar, vanilla bean seeds, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Whisk until combined.
  7. Place the powdered sugar in a medium bowl. Pour the browned butter mixture into the bowl and whisk until combined and smooth. Let cool for 5 minutes before glazing the cake.
  8. Place one of the cooled cakes on a cake stand or plate. Pour the glaze over the cake and spread into an even layer. Place the other cake on top and pour the remaining glaze over the top, spreading into an even layer.
  9. Let the glaze set for 15 minutes before serving.
